“Today everything fell into place. I feel like I’ve finally reached my top form these last few weeks. It is an amazing feeling to win my first race with the elite women. I had hoped for good results this season, of course, but to be given the opportunity to sprint and finish the job is incredible.

“I am privileged to be part of this team. They have given me fantastic support, with tough training and coaching. And they have always been there for me and always believed in me, so it’s nice that they trust me and give me the chance to go for the win at such a young age.

CTC is the cycling organisation with the largest percentage of women members at 25 per cent and many CTC member groups already do great work encouraging women to ride – for example, the inspirational Fabulous Ladies of Chester – and our staff run inspirational activities for women cyclists across the UK.

So although it’s the very first time that CTC is sponsoring a women’s racing team in our 134 years as a national cycling organisation, the move clearly links up with our work past and present. With the invaluable support of our co-sponsors, we decided to launch Team CTC to highlight this work.

Who would win a sprint between me and Kirsten? That’s a very interesting question and I’m tempted to try it out. If it was one against one from low speed I’m quite sure she’d give me a run for my money as she’s very powerful. Her maximum power output is higher than mine so I’d have to win on top speed or aerodynamics. In a short sprint from low speed I wouldn’t put too much money on myself.

If it was at the end of a race I’d be pretty confident because endurance would play a big part. But I can’t deny I’d be a bit scared to lose if I’d had to sprint her for a victory.
